The U19 evaluates interactive mechanisms of normal aging and developmental programming with longitudinal life course studies in a well-characterized nonhuman primate model.
The position involves work that seeks to determine effects of normal, low, and a high plane of maternal nutrition on offspring brain function using in vivo behavioral testing of learning and cognition as well as studies on alterations in brain structure and differentially expressed genes in an extensive archive of baboon brains across the life course. We will seek epigenetic signatures that alter gene expression and protein translation. Intervention studies will be conducted to alter the rate of aging. All studies involve equal numbers of males and females.
Post-doctoral candidate: We are looking to appoint a dynamic and highly self motivated postdoctoral fellow with a doctoral degree from any scientific field to join this program for two years with potential for a further two years. This position is suitable for a first or second post-doctoral position.
We seek a candidate with experience with some or all the following experimental approaches: in vivo behavioral testing, gene expression analysis, in situ hybridization, protein expression analysis (Western, immunohistochemistry), telemetric recordings of movement. Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following fields will be an advantage: developmental programming, obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, nutrition, primate behavior, and animal models.

The Departments of Biomedical Engineering in the Samueli School of Engineering and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry in the School of Biological Sciences are currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar in the area of the age-related metabolic basis of Alzheimer’s disease. The person in the position will perform experiments to alter the course of age-related metabolic changes in neurons in culture and in vivo from Alzheimer-like transgenic mice under the direction of Gregory J. Position Summary. A postdoctoral position is available in the Sutphin Lab to study the role of kynurenine metabolism in aging and age-associated disease. The Sutphin Lab uses a combination of systems and comparative genetics to identify novel genetic and environmental factors capable of influencing longevity and healthspan and characterize their molecular mechanisms of action. We have identified several interventions targeting kynurenine pathway enzymes or metabolites that robustly extend lifespan in C. elegans. A current focus of the lab is to understand the molecular mechanisms through which kynurenine pathway manipulation affects longevity using both C. elegans and mice as model systems. We are further evaluating these interventions as treatments for specific age-associated diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. This position will involve developing, managing, and executing project(s) focused on the mechanisms linking kynurenine metabolism to aging.

The Benayoun laboratory (http://gero.usc.edu/labs/benayounlab/) at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology focuses on the study of how aging influences gene regulation, and in return, how modulation of the epigenome and transcriptome can influence the aging process. To study this question, we use a unique combination of high-throughput 'omics' approaches, machinelearning, and experimental validation in primary cell cultures and vertebrate aging models (e.g. mouse, African turquoise killifish, etc.). The goal of the lab is to discover novel target genes and pathways playing a fundamental role in healthy and pathological aging, while leveraging the power of big data to directing experimental interventions.
The laboratory is seeking a skilled and motivated scientist to join the lab as a postdoctoral fellow and make leading contributions to aging research. Successful candidates should have strong training and publication records, and must be able to learn and work independently, yet collaborate effectively with co-workers. The ideal candidate will have training in experimental or computational biology, and should be interested in becoming comfortable/involved with concepts in both fields. For experimentally-trained candidates, previous expertise in experimental genomics (e.g. RNA-seq), single cell approaches, and immunology would be highly desirable. Dr. Leiser’s NIH-funded studies focus on the biology of aging, using multiple model organisms to understand how organisms perceive and respond to stress. We are particularly interested in the physiological responses to food and oxygen deprivation (hypoxia), and how these responses affect aging. Our lab utilizes C. elegans, mammalian cells, and mouse models to study conserved pathways of stress response and their role in regulating the aging process. These projects offer the unique opportunity to integrate multiple systems to model the biology of aging.

The Newman Lab studies how signaling metabolites regulate mechanisms of aging. We seek motivated, creative scientists to carry out projects that span biochemistry to translational applications in a vibrant atmosphere with a physician-scientist mentor.
We focus on how mechanisms of aging are regulated by the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is made by the body during fasting, ketogenic diet, and exercise. We use a toolkit of ketone body compounds, diet interventions, and genetic modifications to understand the mechanistic effects of ketone bodies on memory and other phenotypes in normal aging, Alzheimer’s disease models, and delirium models. This work involves a combination of in vitro biochemistry, gene expression and protein analysis, and physiological and behavioral studies in laboratory mice.
